In the mountains north of Chameleon Bay, the group encounters a trapped Air Nomad, who had been captured in a tiger pit. It appears the pit had been set up by an Earthbender, and the gang frees the Air Nomad, a monk named Taj who was on the mountain to tend to the shrine of the mountain's guardian spirit. Taqqiq and Enji accompany Taj back to the mountain's peak, where there's a shrine and hot spring onsen set up.
Po, Mayu, and Kensaya, meanwhile, track the Earthbender's trails to a small cave, where an Earthbending assassin waits. He tries to get the jump on Po but is quickly thwarted. Mayu manages to talk the assassin down, although the group is further warned that Po is now an open target to royalist schemers and hitmen.
Back at the hot springs, Taj comforts a distraught Taqqiq, and mentions the spirit of the mountain, a tiger creature, resides within the hills. Coicidentally, a Water Tribe hunter named Vidok arrives. Vidok mentions he was hired by the de facto mayor of Chameleon Bay, a man named Shutao, to hunt the beast that's been terrorizing travelers and citizens of the region. Vidok is uncertain if this is the same creature as the spirit of the mountain, and as the rest of the group returns to the springs, everyone shares their ideas.
The next morning, group sets out among a heavy fog, and Vidok helps track the beast. The white tiger is cornered and snarling, but Mayu taps into a spiritual vision and sees that it is only protecting its territory from violence, and they plead with it to stand down.
Vidok gives the party the up-front payment he received from Shutao, asking them to return when they arrive at Chameleon Bay. Vidok laments he almost killed a spirit, and the group discusses keeping the money, as rumor has it Shutao may not be on the up and up, either, according to Taj.
