Episode 17: The Foggy Swamp

The Companions travel northward and into the Foggy Swamp. It is humid, wet, and dark, where the boughs of the trees block out large swaths of sunlight. They're met by a vicious catgator, which Kensaya terribly tries to drive off. The catgator is driven off by a Foggy-Swamp hunter, a waterbender named Yo, who knows Mayu.Yo asks the gang if they need help, and they decline. Mayu remembers growing up with Yo, competing in the Foggy Swamp with him.

Mayu leads the group through the swamps to his tribal home. They are a little off-put, but Mayu explains what led them there there. He is met by Tuu Wa, the local medicine woman and animist, who says she was expecting him and that Mayu's fate requires returning to the Banyan Tree. Kensaya, chilling in the harmony of the evening, remembers such times with the Mischief Dragons, also, coincidentally, involving a close-call with a catgator.

The tribe hosts a festive dinner to greet the group, and while Taqqiq is curious about the waterbenders around here, Po questions whether they might be holding Mayu back from something. Tuu Wa listens to Mayu's tale about Leyri Leyni, and insists that she is under some dark nightmare, still stuck asleep. The group suggests Amu especially check it out, as it piques his Spirit-World curiosity.

The next day the group visits the sleeping Leyri Leyni, and as Mayu touches her, he's beset with visions of her and Enji in the Spirit World. Tuu Wa warns him that he must face what's trapping her. The Companions prepare for the journey, along with Yo, who accompanies them as the tribes' best hunter, at Mayu's request for a boat to go upstream to the Banyan Tree.

While rowing, Yo leads Kensaya and Po while badmouthing Mayu from their childhood years. Taqqiq leads Mayu and Amu up toward the Tree, and overhearing Yo makes him angry. This causes him to run his boat aground, and the group continues on foot. Mayu leads the group, with Po's encouragement, through the swamplands toward the Banyan Tree, where it is dark and gloomy.

Yo desires to push forward, but Po stands up for the need for the group to rest and be at full attention when they face whatever awaits them. Yo continues ahead, unwilling to wait while the group camps. While camped, Kensaya comforts Taqqiq from his earlier troubles, and the group bonds over the firebenders' dislike of catgators.

The next morning the group cautiously approaches the Banyan grove. There they see Yo, and a phantom of Enji driving the young waterbender's jealousy and discontent. A tear into the Spirit World also allows two Shi-Shi Lions. Mayu engages Yo, his childhood rival, and the others fend off the Shi-Shi Lions. Mayu gives into the determination to meet his fate and bests Yo, managing to spare him. Taqqiq assists Mayu in restraining Yo and questioning his aggression.

Yo explains he just remembered being driven by the memory of the 16 years he and Mayu have been challenging each other, fueled by his jealousy of Mayu being chosen by the Banyan Tree for something special. It somehow took control of him, crested from the Spirit World's energy, and drove them into conflict.

Amu jokes if the group's adventures are all as interesting, but is also concerned why Enji did not materialize through the Spirit World with the Shi-Shi dogs. The Companions resolve to continue to the Si Wong Desert to look for the monk, and return to Mayu's home.

There, they find Tuu Wa and Leyri Leyni -- she's OK and awake now -- and she warns the group the Enji seems frustrated and to be careful. She introduces them to a pet catgator, from whom Kensaya runs scared.
