Having arrived on the shores of the mainland around Wu Long Forest, the gang discusses next steps. Jyoti is insistent on somehow going west to convene with other Air Nomads at the Western Air Temple, and so Toji pushes to looking inside the reliquary.
Inside, they find two journals from an Air Nomad guru named Tribhuvan, a scroll of airbending techniques, and a small miniature glider-toy. While Shizuka "inspects" the toy, Dharma takes an interest in the airbending scroll. Amidst Jyoti's protests, the group investigates the relics while arguing about their next moves. Toji confronts Dharma about being sidetracked and how this would not allow them to combat the corrupted Fire Nation, while Moshi consults and comforts Shizaku in hopes of understanding the engineer's perspective.
The group works to bring their boat ashore, and then loads up Moshi's shirshu, Kou, and head into the forests. They encounter a camp of Earth Kingdom and Water Tribe people, lead by a woman named Neila. The companions explain they're also on the run from the Fire Nation, but that the soldiers are probably not far behind them. Neila stresses they cannot stay long, but gives the companions shelter and fresh clothes. She tells them there's a resistance camp forming in the east, near Makapu. When the group tells her they are going to the Western Air Temple, she says the best way there might be to find a boat or hidden air-bison passage from the city of Yu Dao to the north, a hybrid colony of the Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom. But the way to Yu Dao is guarded by a Fire Nation checkpoint.
The group sends Jyoti and the relics, along with Shizaku's assistant Joji, on Kou to go around the checkpoint through the forested mountains. The companions begin to investigate the checkpoint, sending Dharma in first. Dharma first takes note of all the soldiers, and then is told her needs a citizen's pass for crossing the checkpoint. In a panic, he attempts to lift a pass off of one of the guards, but is caught. A fight ensues, and Dharma begins to head for the opposite side toward the Yu Dao exit. During this exchange he reveals his airbending powers to the soldiers.
Meanwhile, the companions wait in the forest and are worried when Dharma doesn't return. They also encounter a Fire Nation contingent, led by Captain Shan, sent from the prison to reclaim the prisoners and the reliquary. Pretending to be foragers, the group sends Shan on a goose-chase to the north-east, away from the checkpoint. They then go to collect Dharma and high-tail it out of there.
The group arrives at the checkpoint and find the soldiers mid-fight with Dharma. They exclaim to capture 'the airbender,' and the companions move it to assist their comrade. During the fight Dharma is exhausted, and the group picks him up and clears the way out, moving out toward Yu Dao with the guards and the checkpoint momentarily blinded and confused....
